The Papiamento Advantage

People hear that I speak five languages and assume the advantage is vocabulary. It is not. The advantage is that I grew up having to read the room before I could rely on the words.

In the ABC Islands, a single conversation can move through Papiamento, Dutch, English, and Spanish in a few minutes. When you switch languages that often, you stop trusting the words to carry the meaning. You start reading tone, posture, pace, and warmth. You learn that the message lives underneath the language.

Why this matters far from the islands

That early training turned out to be the whole game. Most communication problems are not vocabulary problems. They are energy problems. The words are fine. What is off is the presence behind them.

Papiamento itself is a lesson in this. It is a creole, built from many languages by people who had to connect across difference. It exists because connection mattered more than purity. That is the spirit I bring into every workshop: meet people where they are, in the register they actually feel.

The practice

You do not need five languages to get this advantage. You need to start listening for what is underneath the words, in yourself first.
